Hide and Seek: a poem

I thought I saw the sun today

A tiny glimpse, a solitary ray.

A silvery glimmer upon the pond

A twinkle through the bracken fronds

A lighter green in the valley below

A sheen on the branch that comes and goes

The brightening promise beyond the cloud

Elusive and shifting, a heavenly shroud

A shimmer and ripple that tantalises

Then disappears as the water rises

A solitary leaf that catches the light

The summer hiding in plain sight

The glint and glitter through skeleton trees

Then carried away on the winter breeze

A rabbit's tail disappearing from view

Gracing the eye with a whiter hue

I think I saw the sun today

A chink in the armour of winter's grey

A ray of hope, maybe nature's way,

Of reminding us all that winter won't stay
